When you’re pregnant, your blood contains fragments of your baby’s DNA.
Your blood sample is analysed to assess the risk of genetic conditions such as Down Syndrome, Edwards Syndrome, and Patau Syndrome.
Traditional screening tests can miss Down syndrome cases in pregnant women. All NIPT tests have an accuracy rate of over 99%.
At your appointment with us, a 10ml blood sample will be taken from your arm by a healthcare professional. If the sample is collected before 10 weeks then it is highly likely that the results will be inconclusive. Therefore the expecting mother has to be at least 10 weeks into pregnancy..
(The NIPT test does not replace the need to have other baby scans).
NIPT tests are 99% not 100% conclusive – this is due to naturally occurring biological instances where the fetal DNA differs from the placental DNA.
It usually takes 5 – 7 working days* from the day the sample arrives at the laboratory. The data from the laboratory test is entered into the NIPT analysis software and an easy to interpret result report is generated for you to discuss with your healthcare professional.

NIPT is usually available from 10 weeks of pregnancy onwards. This gives enough fetal DNA in the mother’s blood for the sample to be analysed properly.
NIPT is most commonly used to screen for Down’s syndrome (Trisomy 21), Edwards’ syndrome (Trisomy 18), and Patau’s syndrome (Trisomy 13). Some private tests can include additional chromosome conditions, but the main conditions screened are usually these three.
Some NIPT tests can also include fetal sex determination as part of the results. This depends on the test package selected and whether gender reporting is included by the laboratory. If this is something you would like to know, it is best to check in advance whether it forms part of your chosen test.
Yes, NIPT is considered safe because it only requires a blood sample from the mother. It is a non-invasive screening test, which means there is no risk to the baby from the test itself. This is one reason why many parents choose it for early screening.
A high-risk result does not confirm that your baby has a chromosomal condition, but it does mean further discussion and follow-up testing may be recommended. Depending on the result, this could include diagnostic tests such as CVS or amniocentesis, which can provide a more definite answer.
Many people choose NIPT because it offers early screening, it requires only a blood sample, and it has a higher level of accuracy than some traditional screening methods. It can provide more information early in pregnancy and helps parents to decide on any next steps with greater confidence.
